Local businesses promote employment opportunities for people with disabilitiesAbility Beyond Disability hosts 2nd Annual National Disability Mentoring Event 10/21-10/23
Ability Beyond Disability invites local business and students to join in it’s second annual mentoring event from October 21st – 23rd in honor of Disability Mentoring Day (DMD), a national program that promotes career opportunities for students and job-seekers with disabilities. The three-day mentoring event being held during National Disability Employment Awareness month will offer individuals with disabilities the opportunity to tour various work environments and shadow employees at local businesses. The event is expected to involve between 75 and 100 people with disabilities with mentoring sites that currently include government, hospitality, retail, food service and media outlets, with opportunities still available for other industries to get involved. The event will kickoff at Western Connecticut State University on October 21st. Guest speakers for the event will include: Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, Ridgefield First Selectman, Rudy Marconi and Nancy Di Dia, Director, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, at Boehringer Ingelheim among others. Some of the local businesses that are already on board for Ability Beyond Disability’s DMD event include: Danbury Town Hall, i-95, the Danbury News Times, Dental Associates, Olive Garden, Stew Leonards and Danbury Animal Welfare. Throughout the month of October Ability Beyond Disability is celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with a variety of events aimed at raising awareness and providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. A wheelchair basketball tournament titled, "Hoops for Hope" will be held on October 22nd to raise funds in support of NDEAM. The tournament will take place at Danbury High School on 10/22 at 7:00PM. Ability Beyond Disability is a 501{c} (3) organization headquartered in Bethel, Conn. and Mount Kisco, N.Y. It provides a wide range of services for approximately 1,300 people with a disability that inhibits their activities of daily living -- including numerous residential alternatives, employment training, career counseling, job placement services, cognitive and life skills instruction, clinical and therapeutic support, and volunteer and recreational activities.
