A Few Thoughts About Working with Lou and Joe from Ability Beyond Disability...

I came to Clearpool Education Center in the Spring of 2004 and was informed that I'd be working with folks from Ability Beyond Disability. It was a relationship that began because of connections our organizations had through our Board of Directors. We were to have 2-3 gentlemen working in our kitchen at dinnertime. I did as I was asked, and finalized the details of their employment.

There was some question as to the efficiency of having these helpers, and the practicality of having them interface with our students. With a bit of coaching and reassurance that our organization would benefit from this relationship, the staff embraced Lou and Joe as part of our team. Each evening they prepare the dining hall for meals, set out the salad bar and other food items, assist students with their dishes after dinner and clean up after the meal. Staff and clients alike have related stories about how much fun it is to have Lou and Joe around. They tell funny stories, do anything they are asked to do (and do it well), and they truly appreciate being here with us.

When I was debriefing a particularly busy 3-week summer camp with one of our staff members, I was to learn just what an important part of our team Lou and Joe have become. Our staff member shared countless things about the week's work that were hard, overwhelming and could be done better next year. As I scribbled pages of notes of improvements for next summer, I stopped and asked him, "Was there ANTHING good?!" He smiled and said, "Yes, Lou and Joe."
